Taking a chance on Chance

It took a while to decide whether I wanted to see Taking Chance, an HBO film that debuted at Sundance last month and hit cable this past week. Watching a movie about a Marine who escorts the body of another Marine home didn’t sound like the best idea for a woman whose husband is about to go to war.

Then again, that same man had me watch Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers before his last deployment (file that under What the Hell Were You Thinking), so I thought I could continue the traumatic movie ritual.

It wasn’t traumatic, however. Taking Chance was a careful, respectful look at what happens to someone killed in action. It was quiet, dignified, and devoid of politics. At the risk of being morbid, I found some small comfort in knowing how well my sweetheart would be treated, if the worst were to happen.

Even so, I hesitate to recommend the movie; everyone has a different way of dealing with a loved one in danger and all the what-ifs that entails. But I can say, even as the big fat silent tears rolled down my face, that I am so glad I watched this.

I'll have to catch this on DVD once my hormones are back to normal. The preview did get to me, and when my husband watched the preview, he did get a little choked up. I am glad that such a movie was made.

my husband made me watch a movie about Desert Storm right before he deployed, where the entire camp of American's get blown up and murdered in the first fifteen minutes.

I cried, uncontrollably, for about an hour.

This sounds interessting, though. I'll have to see if it's on HBO anytime soon.

I'll have to see it, I saw an ad for it in a magazine and wondered if it would be a good one. I'm pretty careful about the when and where of watching those types of movies, too. Hits a little too close to home.

I cried a river through the whole thing. Yes I took comfort in knowing that so many people would pay respect to my husband should this ever be his fate but I find now that I have a child the idea of losing one of his parents makes me so much more emotional.

Kevin Bacon can be a bit of a dunderhead but he did a great job in this. I felt he did a very respectful job to the officer and the Marine being brought home.
