Sometimes I wonder what the hell my ancestors were thinking when they left Alsace. “All this wine and exquisitely sauced food! We can’t stand it anymore. On to Pennsylvania and scrapple!” (I kid, Loqi. I have enjoyed my visits to the Keystone State.)
My French is limited to please, thank you, and identifying what I would like to eat. That seemed to work all right; everyone was gracious and friendly. Showing appreciation for someone’s cooking doesn’t always require words. Sometimes all it takes is a plate licked clean. (I kid, Mom. I did not lick any plates.)
I love the cheekiness of the Christmas market set up right in front of the Strasbourg cathedral. Holy Communion, or fresh crepes and spiced wine? Probably best to cover all bases.
Who doesn’t enjoy a pit bull-donkey gargoyle?
See that church in the distance? Its bells ring every 15 minutes, day and night. We stayed in the restored abbey next door. Not the best idea. However, it did give my husband many opportunities to perfect his Quasimodo imitation.
The hiking trails around Mont Ste. Odile are great. One of them passes the monastery’s cemetery -- as well as a wall built by the pagans a thousand or so years ago.

Great pictures! Happy and safe travels!
I have the same thought every time I go to Scotland - and boy, it was hell moving back to the US from there. Why on earth would anyone leave such a gorgeous place?
Well, I suppose in Scotland's case, anyway, the weather and the food didn't help its case much. But still.
I am proud to say I have never eaten scrapple, and that I'm not sure I even know exactly what it is. Just the sound of the word grosses me out. :-p
Sounds like an awesome trip, I am totally jealous. Except for the bells ringing every fifteen minutes. :)
beautiful! I guess it could have been worse, the bells could have wrong every five minutes.
and I know its a sidenote but how can loqi not have ever had scrapple?!!
Keep 'em coming...I love the pictures!
Alas, the travels are done. It's back to shots of Kansas for the next long while.
Scrapple! Is that same as the(corn) "mush" that my mom fixed? (My folks were from PA)
Adorable adorable blog!! How have we not met on the blogosphere??
I could've given you some lessons. :)
Thank you! My inability to grasp the rudiments of French phonics can't be underestimated, however.
